| Who can apply | A Master's degree or equivalent with at least 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third gender), or a 4-year bachelor's degree with the required aggregate. Indian citizens only. Final-year Master's students may apply provisionally. |
| Age / class | JRF: not more than 30 years on the first day of the exam month, with relaxations for some categories. No upper age limit for Assistant Professor. |
| Stages | Computer-based test in one of five subjects (Chemical, Earth/Atmospheric/Ocean/Planetary, Life, Mathematical, Physical Sciences), with three objective parts A, B and C. |
| What it leads to | Qualifies a candidate for a Junior Research Fellowship with Assistant Professor eligibility, for Assistant Professor and PhD admission, or for PhD admission only, in the sciences. |
