| Who can apply | A Master's degree or equivalent from a UGC-recognised university with at least 55% marks (50% for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third gender). Students awaiting Master's results may apply provisionally. |
| Age / class | JRF: not more than 30 years on the first day of the exam month, with relaxations for some categories. No upper age limit for Assistant Professor or PhD admission. |
| Stages | Computer-based test with two objective parts taken together without a break: Part I (teaching and research aptitude) and Part II (the candidate's chosen subject). |
| What it leads to | Qualifies a candidate for JRF with Assistant Professor eligibility, for Assistant Professor and PhD admission, or for PhD admission only, in Indian universities and colleges. UGC-NET can serve as a PhD entrance test. |
