Exam pattern

One paper of 30 questions to be done in 3 hours; maximum 100 marks. Every question has a one-digit or two-digit number as its answer, marked on a machine-read OMR answer sheet (offline exam). Questions 1 to 10 carry 2 marks each, questions 11 to 20 carry 3 marks each and questions 21 to 30 carry 5 marks each. All questions are compulsory and there are no negative marks. Calculators, mobile phones and other electronic devices are not allowed. The question paper is in English and Hindi. The marks split and instructions are as printed on the IOQM 2025 question paper; the HBCSE stages page (three hours, 30 questions, one- or two-digit answers, OMR, English and Hindi) and the IOQM 2026-27 portal FAQ (offline OMR, no negative marking) agree with it.

Syllabus

Algebra1 topic group

The official syllabus is a short document, common to the Mathematical Olympiad programme (IMO, EGMO, APMO and the domestic rounds RMO and INMO), that the IOQM portal and the HBCSE IOQM page link as the syllabus. It first says an aspirant must be familiar with all the topics covered in the NCERT Mathematics books of Class VIII, IX and X - a school-book base with no topic list of its own, so it is stated here and not made a subject or chapter - and that the topics below are to be given importance in addition; it names the major areas as algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory (difficulty increasing from RMO to INMO to IMO). Subjects here are exactly those four areas, as the document headings name them (Algebra, Plane Geometry, Combinatorics, Number Theory). The document gives one topic list per area and no chapter titles, so each area has one chapter carrying the whole list, kept in the document's own wording and punctuation; splitting the lists into smaller chapters would be the LAPT team's choice, not the body's. The document also lists recommended books for each area (not reproduced) and ends: 'It must be noted that the topics listed above do not constitute an exhaustive list. Problems asked in the RMO and INMO may include topics not explicitly stated above.' The IOQM portal FAQ adds that Calculus and Statistics are excluded. One difference between official editions: the IOQM portal PDF and the HBCSE syllabus page (both used above) say the NCERT base is Class VIII, IX and X, while the newer HBCSE brochure 'Mathematical Olympiads 2026-2027' (PDF p. 15, printed p. 13) says Class VIII, IX, X, XI and XII; the four topic lists are word for word the same in all three. The IOQM 2026 question papers and answer key are on an external folder linked from the IOQM portal, which is not the body's own address, so it is not listed as a document. The HBCSE FAQ page (olympiads.hbcse.tifr.res.in/faq/) is headed 2023-24, so it was not used. The official pages do not say in one sentence how often IOQM is held; `frequency` records the yearly cycle the pages name. The eligibility notice's birth-date window, residence and Class 12 dates, and the exam, registration and result dates and fees, are on the official pages and are not copied here. No marks per area or chapter-wise weightage are published. Exam pattern: read from the IOQM 2025 question paper (the latest paper opened); the IOQM 2026 paper itself was not opened.

Algebra

Inequalities, Progressions (A.P, G.P, H.P), Theory of indices, System of linear equations, Theory of equations, Binomial theorem and properties of binomial coefficients, Complex Numbers, Polynomials in one and two variables, Functional equations, Sequences

  • Syllabus for Mathematical Olympiad Verified against the document
    Syllabus · Mathematics Teachers' Association (India) - IOQM 2026-27 portal · 2026 · checked 25 Sep 2026
Opened https://ioqm.mtai.org.in/ on 2026-09-25 and followed its 'Syllabus' link to this 2-page PDF, headed 'Syllabus for Mathematical Olympiad:' (the PDF prints no year; it is the syllabus the IOQM 2026-27 portal links). It states three points (familiarity with all topics in the NCERT Mathematics books of Class VIII, IX and X; the listed topics are to be given importance; the major areas are algebra, combinatorics, geometry and number theory) and then lists Algebra, Plane Geometry and Combinatorics (p. 1) and Number Theory (p. 2), each with a topic list and recommended books. After writing the file I re-opened the PDF and compared the 4 area headings and the 4 topic lists with the file: all 4 match word for word (compared with a second read of the PDF text, ignoring spacing); no area is missing or extra. Not carried into the file: the lists of recommended books and the closing remark, which is quoted in structure_note. The PDF does not name IOQM; the IOQM portal FAQ and the HBCSE stages page both point to it as the syllabus.
